My Exercise Journey

June 6, 2019

I’ll be honest I was never very into working out. I played softball and field hockey in high school but once I dislocated my one knee cap I lost the desire to really be athletic. When I got to college, I gained the freshman 20! I think it was needed because I was way underweight but I still did not work out or go near a gym. I was terrified. Sophomore year and junior year I dabbled in the gym but was so uncomfortable I only went a handful of times. My sorority big, Becky, even tried to help my anxiety by going with me and coaching me but I still didn’t enjoy going.

My senior year of college I took a spin class and a yoga class the semester I graduated. I was obsessed with both and loved how I felt. And I went to almost every class because I paid for it.

After graduating college, I tried running but I just don’t enjoy it. Michael tried to run with me and I ran/walked a 5k but was miserable. He’s a great runner and I’m so happy for him. It’s just not for me. I also don’t want to do anything by myself because it makes me nervous. For Christmas, Michael bought me a spin bike that we both use and I actually love having it downstairs. When I want to use I can and if I don’t I have no guilt because Michael uses it.

I got a new follower on Instagram recently, barre3cherryhill. I had no idea who was running the account but I followed back and saw that they were a barre exercise class. I had heard of barre method and was always interested but never wanted to try or go alone. But I went out of my comfort zone and signed up for one of her classes in her backyard.

I showed up, got my mat set up and started to calm myself by breathing before class started. I tried to stay towards the back of the group since I am not talented in the workout world. To say I’m obsessed is an understatement. I’ve gone to 4 classes in a week and a half with so many more scheduled in my planner!

Vanessa is the owner of barre3 in Cherry Hill and is the sweetest and most supportive person. She has been the instructor in every class and makes sure to mention all the modification types for each experience level. She explained that Barre is a full body workout that incorporates cardio, strength, conditioning, and mindfulness. She wants everyone to feel comfortable which means so much as someone who is uncomfortable in situations like that.

The workouts themselves kick my butt every time but I love every second of it! I hate sweating but when I sweat during class I feel so proud of myself for working hard and participating! At the end of each class, there is a cool down and breathing portion of class where you appreciate the work you put in and the fact that you did it!!

I’ve noticed that I’m sleeping so much better since starting these classes! I also just feel a huge sense of release after. I think I hold onto my stress all over my body so this has helped!

I’m very excited for her studio to open later this year! I highly highly recommend coming to a class if you are in the area! Everyone is so nice and Vanessa makes me want to work harder during my workouts!!

Check her out @barre3cherryhill!!
