The Science Behind Activated Charcoal

March 24, 2019

There’s this new hype around town about activated charcoal. I will be completely honest that I have never tried any products but I wanted to look into the science of it all since it’s all the rage.

So what is it?

Activated charcoal is made from heating carbon-rich materials like wood or coconut shells to very high temperatures. By burning the material at such a high temperature, the previously bound molecules are stripped allowing for other molecules to attach to the dust. When the “pores” open up again, it allows for more surface area. The chemical formula of burning carbon rich materials is Carbon + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide. Carbon is a solid, Oxygen is a gas, and Carbon Dioxide is also a gas.

It was most often used to treat overdoses and poisoning in hospitals by inducing diarrhea. There is no solid research to back up the medicinal benefits of activated charcoal. Most often we see it being used as a teeth whitening agent. It could be beneficial in removing the toxins from enamel in our teeth, but again no clinical research has been done. The same properties of toxin removal can attest to keeping our kidneys healthy.

It is thought that when the “pores” are open, activated charcoal can help with neutralizing the trapped gases and liquids in the intestines.

The coolest thing I’ve read about using activated charcoal is in water filtration. It removes toxins just like the other situations.  It could be a great help when camping or out in the wild.

Activated charcoal can also be used for skin care or skin infections. The charcoal pulls the microparticles from the skin or inside the wound.

It can be used as a deodorant by absorbing smells, moisture, and any humidity levels.

Before using any activated charcoal product, consult with a doctor as it is still a new area of medicine.

Pretty neat stuff!!

If you’re looking for some skin care products made of charcoal there is this awesome brand Yes To and Nugg that has facial wipes and masks!! They can be found at Whole Foods and Target!!
